I was exploring the Market Street area of downtown Charleston one late summer evening when I found this interesting scene.

I was lucky to be walking on the newly completed Folly Beach pier when I snapped this.
The colors looked unreal.

I combined three images to create this piece. I went to the beach during a late summer storm and captured several images of the beach and sky. I then used editing software to composite multiple images to create the panorama. I attempted to recreate the lighting conditions with the model. The fun part was making the tornado. Yes, I did it the way I was taught in science class-soap, water, and various, kitchen spices and lighting tricks.

I was working as a dining room server at the Old Faithful Inn. While trekking around the Madison River to find a good place to catch that storied cutthroat trout, I found the hunter, waiting…watching. I decided to steal this shot before I turned around and went the other way.

Part of a boat study I shot in 2008. I parked at the marina gas station and walked back up the James Island connector to get this shot. I remember walking toward on-coming traffic, which was scarier than it might seem. It was a chilly November morning, and it seemed like that walk took forever. When I saw the sun reflecting off the fog that morning, I knew something cool was happening, and when I saw this shot on the screen, I knew it was special. I was glad I got up early that day to get this shot.

I won’t disclose exactly where I shot this from, but I can say that I was close by, I was licensed, and the flight complied with all drone-related FAA regulations. All that aside, it was one of my first days testing out the new aircraft and its capabilities. Needless to say, I was happy with the results. I love the perspective, especially at sunrise.

Such a great story. During the covid lockdowns it was not permitted to go to the beach unless you lived out there. That didn’t fly with me and some of my more adventurous associates. Three brave friends and I ventured out for a stealth camping trip to the island on kayaks. Three hours later we landed, just before the sun went down. We got camp set, we got drunk, and we got utterly destroyed by the most aggressive mosquitoes. The likes of which, I’d never seen before. I woke up cold, and discombobulated. But what i did notice were the hundred or so mosquitoes lying in wait for us to move around. They were perched on the ceiling of the tent. I sat up slowly, to take measure of where we’d decided to put the tent in our haste. I looked out the “window” and saw one of the most beautiful sunrises that I had ever seen. Sadly, my phone had the only camera I had brought.
“The best camera is the one you have.”

I grabbed this shot while on my Yellowstone adventure. My friends and I were on a long hike that day, 16 miles took about 12 hours. I remember seeing the landscape change many times, from open pastures to thick brush, to ice cold creeks. It was the longest hike I’ve been on both before and since. I remember eagerly looking for the markers, and how relieved I felt when we’d come to one. I’m sure this one was a sight for sore eyes.

When i was a kid, my dad had an old powder blue Ford F100. As kids, my brother and I hated that truck. We were embarrassed to ride in it. It was big, old, and loud. When I was a kid, all i wanted to do was fit in, all i wanted to be was invisible. Funny what a few years will change, now at 44, what i wouldn’t give to toss a couple of surfboards in the back of that old truck, and head out to Folly. I think I owe that old truck an apology, and probably one to Dad as well. This truck was not the same as the one we had. But it was enough to remind me of my Dad, and how much he loved that truck.

The waves were going to be good that day. Surfers are interesting. We probably couldn’t tell you what we had for lunch two days ago, but we definitely know if there’s waves on any given day. My intent was to surf that morning. “Just take the camera,” I thought. When I got out there I parked and walked up the beach access to take measure of the waves. I saw this happening, and I ran back to the car, grabbed the camera, then ran back to the boardwalk. I was so excited that I don’t even remember how the camera was setup, I just started shooting, checking, and shooting again. I stole several shots that morning before I couldn’t resist the urge to go get a couple while the sun was still low.
